From historical towns and cities, to a countryside speckled with castles and chateaus, the Czech Republic is a holiday destination that can satisfy everybody's taste. Even though it's modern and fully-developed, the country carefully preserves its traditions and heritage.
Take in the medieval surroundings in the Old Town, before wandering across Charles Bridge, a long stretch of low-lying masonry that dates back over 600 years. Then follow the Malá Strana up to Prague Castle for sweeping city views, which are dominated by the sky-scraping St. Vitus Cathedral. This massive gothic structure measures 90 metres from top to bottom – an epic, neck-craning height when you enter through its Golden Gates. Yet there is also a refreshingly bohemian feel to Prague. Wander down its twisting cobblestone streets to find cozy cafes, microbreweries and modern art galleries.
The wild forests of Šumava National Park, the country’s largest national park, is packed with glacial lakes, trout streams and acres of primeval forest to explore – and it’s free to enter. Elsewhere, take in the UNESCO-listed town of Ceský Krumlov and its majestic castle, discover a church made of human bones in Kutná Hora, learn how pilsner beer was made with a brewery tour in Plzeň and finish with a steamy soak in the hot springs of Karlovy Vary.
In general, the climate is continental, with short, fairly hot summers and chilly winters. Spring can be the best time to visit, as the days tend to warm quickly, with consistently pleasant, mild weather for most of May. This is also the blossom season, when the fruit trees that line so many Czech roads are in full flower. Autumn is also recommended, with clear and settled weather often lasting for days on end in September and October.
